Visiting a bank to resolve inheritance-related matters is no longer necessary. If a certificate of inheritance in digital format is available, signed by a notary public with a valid electronic signature, the entire inheritance-related process can be handled remotely at SEB, including if the heir is not a customer of SEB.
What is required to apply for the payment of inheritance?
To apply for the payment of inheritance at SEB remotely, the following is required:
- A certificate of inheritance issued in the Republic of Latvia in digital format, signed by a notary with a valid electronic signature.
- An inheritance application completed and signed by the heir with a valid electronic signature (e.g., Smart- ID qualified version or eSignature).
- If the heir is not a customer of SEB, a valid personal identification document and a filled-in data questionnaire (PDF) is also required.
Filling in an application for inheritance
To resolve the matters related to inheritance as conveniently and easily as possible, we have prepared an inheritance application form. The inheritance beneficiary must download it to a device, complete and sign it with a valid electronic signature.
The form must contain the given name, surname, and the personal identity number of the deceased who left the inheritance behind. Information on the heir must also be provided, including the amount of inheritance, the number of the certificate of inheritance, and the heir's account number to which the inheritance should be transferred. Please note that the account must be that of the heir – the inherited share will not be transferred to an account opened in the name of another person.
How to correctly submit documents to the bank
The documents related to inheritance to SEB should be submitted via the e-document signing site. The site can also be used in cases where the beneficiary of the inheritance is not a customer of SEB.
Log in to the e-document site and press “Upload document”. Then attach a certificate of inheritance, electronically signed by a notary. Select “Inheritance” as the document type and “Inheritance certificate signed by a notary with a qualified electronic signature” as a sub-type. Then click on “Next” and confirm the uploading of the document.
Then upload a completed and electronically signed inheritance certificate application. The only difference – select “Application for the inheritance payment” as the sub-type of the document.
If you are not a customer of SEB, please also upload a filled-in data questionnaire and a photo of your ID. You can take these photos with your mobile phone. If you take a photo of an eID card, take photos of both sides of the card. It is important that you can read the text on the pictures clearly, so we recommend that you take the photos in a well-lit place. The photos should be uploaded just the same as you upload the certificate of inheritance – select “ID document and Data sheet” as the document sub-type.
If you are a customer of SEB, uploading data questionnaire and ID photos is not necessary.
If there is more than one heir, the contract on the division of the inheritance (if such has been concluded) must also be uploaded. The contract must be drawn up in the form of a notarial deed and certified by a notary with a secure electronic signature. The contract can also be drawn up as a private document signed by the parties with secure electronic signatures.
How fast inheritance is paid
Once you have uploaded all the necessary documents, we will process the application and pay out the inheritance. This process usually takes up to 5 working days. If there are any further questions, our colleagues will contact you to arrange the most convenient time for a remote video meeting.
Also, in cases where the inheritance includes financial instruments (e.g., loan services, 3rd pension pillar savings, securities, etc.), we will offer you an appointment for a remote video meeting to find the best solution for your situation.
Commissions charged for the payment of inheritance
Upon submitting the inheritance application remotely or in person at a branch, a commission will be charged for the evaluation of inheritance documents in accordance with the General Price list. If a higher commission than the minimum set out in the price list will need to be charged, we shall contact you before withholding the commission to agree on the cost of the service.
In the case of an inheritance payment to the heir’s account, a commission for the transfer will be charged according to the transfer charge of the branch as specified in the General Price list.
If the inheritance is savings products (term deposits) and the heir wishes to terminate the agreement early, an early withdrawal commission will be charged according to the General Price list.
The commissions referred to above are withheld from the inherited share.
When the remote service is not available
Remote inheritance services are not available if the heir is a minor or the heir is represented by an authorised person. In these cases, the inheritance-related matters will need to be attended to in person at one of our branches by booking an appointment in advance on our website.
