As Russia increases aggression against Ukraine, the number of cyber-attacks and false news is escalating. Therefore, we would like to remind you about the main principles of cyber security.
Latest software and public Wi-Fi networks
We advise to always install the latest smart device software updates provided by the manufacturers. These updates resolve the possible security vulnerabilities, which in turn prevents potential attacks. Delaying the installation of updates can, in the worst case, lead to information leakage and data loss.
When using the internet, we suggest using your home internet connection or your mobile carrier’s connection. Avoid public and unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Set a secure password for your home Wi-Fi network.
Fake news and e-mails
Cybercriminals have long used e-mails and their attachments. This trend also continues during the tense geopolitical situation. An attached that’s infected with malware can be extremely dangerous. Never open suspicious looking e-mails. Always check whether the sender’s address matches the sender’s name, and if the website address matches the actual one.
By pretending to be an employee of a bank or government institution, fraudsters often try to gain access to passwords and other access data from their potential victims. Never reveal your passwords to others by e-mail, letters, text messages or phone.
All your passwords should be at least 8 characters long and include several capital letters and numbers. If possible, always use 2 factor authentication when signing into your accounts.
Currently fake news are spread more actively in various apps and social media sites. Their goal is to cause public panic and distrust of the state. Always check the source and authenticity of messages before sharing them.
Companies also need to stay aware
Cyber security issues are also becoming increasingly important for public and private sector institutions and companies. The mentioned cyber security principles must also be observed when using a work computer or device. Information technology security incident prevention institution (CERT.LV) have prepared recommendations (in Latvian) on how companies can now improve their security systems.
